Howard G. Fass; Why The Snow Lion Foundation?

Personal reasons and motivations / 2008

Mount Kailash
Mount Kailash, A holy mountain in Tibet

I have been asked by so many people about why I am starting this human rights organization and what are the motivations behind it that I decided that I would simply just post my answers here? I hope these make some sense...

Human rights, Religious freedom and the rights of self-determination for the 1.3 Billion people of Tibet, Uyghur, Taiwan and China.

"Why get involved? Why does it matter, who cares and what the hell do you think you can do about it?"

First of all, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what I can do about it. Maybe nothing actually...

Who knows...

I think the important thing to think about is to simply care and to try doing something using practical and positive skillful means.

Doing nothing, in my mind, guarantees that from your own side you will not be contributing anything to positive change and may very well be aiding and abetting harm.

I think its simply about opening up ones' heart and actually feeling that because another human being somewhere is being opressed there is a natural connection to oneself in some way and this on its own becomes a self-evident reason to try to get involved and do something about it, whatever that particular something comes to be.

This is what I think morality and religion ultimately are all about; trying to do the right thing and correctly navigate within the universe and life.

This is not an issue of jumping on some popular Hollywood band-wagon or personal ego-trip parade; because quite frankly there will be no thanks and no reward given by anyone for doing what is right when it comes to politics, social action and human rights... in all honesty, it might just get one  into serious harm by those who inflict the oppression because they will not appreciate being called out and will likely attack you in any way they can. Just ask any of the brave Tibetan nuns who consistently stand up for freedom and religious rights against savage brutality at the hands of the occupying Chinese communists inside Tibet.

The stakes are not small. But none of this is about any individual effort by me or anyone else, its about feeling compassion for those who are being deprived of their rightful legal and natural human rights and freedoms of religion and self-determination.

If we, as a species, in the future ever come to lose or surrender these most basic freedoms to some monolithic corporate or governmental machine then being human may someday come to lose its meaning. If we do not become more vigilant and involved whatever liberties and freedoms we currently have may become lost; like the old saying goes "Freedom isn't free".

In the new world-order run by corporate giants and international politics increasingly more and more indifferent to human rights, the mass peoples of the world owe it to themselves to get involved and do something. Demand change, vote, lobby elected representatives and keep the issues alive until something happens...

Saving your distant neighbor somewhere else on the planet actually has far reaching implications that benefit one's own interests as well... Like Martin Luther King Jr. once said; "Injustice perpetrated anywhere, diminishes justice everywhere". So in short, your own freedoms and legal protections become strengthened when other's self-same freedoms and protections are promoted...

From myside, I have no particular goal other than to try my best to communicate to others and keep up the conversations about Tibet, Taiwan and freedom for China. I am not a gifted communicator, I have no political or power connections or particular agendas, I am not paid in any way by anyone else and earn no pay to do this; I just feel called to try and start this journey and see what can be done...

All I know is to simply just walk away from this all and be indifferent seems too tragic in a world knee deep in hell, suffering and pain.

I guess in the end, one can either choose to look away and shutter to think about it any more and tune it all out as best they can or one can choose to brave the reality headon and try to make whatever change they possibly can one small step forward at a time.

I hope these collected ramblings here somehow make some sense and answer the questions that have been asked of me on this...

Thanks for reading...
