Some worrying questions regarding the new "agreements" between the KMT and China.
April 30, 2009
From participation in the Olympics to the World Health Organization (WHO) and others, the independent nation-state of Taiwan is always either held back completely or denigrated as "Chinese Taipei" in the eyes of the world.
With all the apparent excitement and exuberance over the recent "progress" between relations with Taiwan and China has anyone really looked closely at the details? On the face of it, the recent decision on the part of China to allow Taiwan observer status at the WHO looks promising. On the face of it, it sounds reasonable and beneficial for the two sides to cooperate on legal and criminal matters. The problem is that there is little to no transparency whatsoever to the recent KMT / CCP agreement process that stand to impact Taiwan and its people in so many ways.
Lets first look at the recent development with Taiwan and the WHO. What this recent action amounts to is simply Beijing temporarily allowing Taiwan to sit in the kiddy seat at the WHO as "Chinese Taipei" and further show the world that it is fact China and not the 23 million Taiwanese people who has the real say internationally with regards to the island of Formosa.
What's more is that what has been granted today may not be granted tomorrow. Its the promise of the constant "carrot and the stick" without ever getting the greater permanent reward that every other nation-state receives and deserves. By playing ball with this policy Taiwan only seems to further denigrate itself by kowtowing to the PRC and perpetuate continued international confusion regarding the real situation and status of democratic independent Taiwan. Are the true feelings of the Taiwanese people really reflected by this temporary observer status as "Chinese Taipei" at the whim of The Peoples Republic of China? We think not.
Perhaps even more disconcerting is the recent cooperation regarding certain legal and criminal functions between the two rival nations. On the surface it may seem and feel reasonable and good. But when you look deeper perhaps there is serious reason to worry?
Remember that what is and is not considered "criminal" can mean entirely different things to entirely different nations. Especially when one is supposed to be a democracy ruled by the people and by law and the other is a totalitarian state ruled by the communist party.
One has only to ask oneself; how would Beijing view a pro Taiwan-independence protestor or organization? He or she would very likely be violating the "Anti-Secession" wouldn't they? What about Tibet and Uyghur freedom protesters and Chinese dissidents? How about Falun Gong and anyone else who might dare to challenge the CCP super-state inside Taiwan? Might not Beijing someday conceivably come to ask Taipei to fulfill its "agreement" here to repress these individuals or extradite them to China for "enforcement of the law"?
These are the questions that must be asked here and answered. The Taiwanese people are at great danger if they have no idea as to what is being signed and what is involved with these KMT / CCP agreements.
